Casa Grande's Harkin is really good. Right?

OK, for starters, full disclosure: I’ve seen Scott Harkin play exactly twice.

But, to me, Casa Grande’s senior shortstop/pitcher is a very impressive player.

He’s 6-foot-3, 185 pounds and throws a fastball that hovers around 90 mph. This season, he hit .386 and had an 0.68 ERA. In 41 innings, he allowed 23 hits, issued four walks and had 54 strikeouts.

So what’s the point? Well, Harkin hasn’t received much interest from colleges. After Casa Grande’s loss to Clayton Valley in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals Wednesday, he said he’ll likely end up playing at Sacramento City College or Santa Rosa Junior College next season.

I’m no evaluator of baseball talent, but I’m surprised Harkin hasn’t attracted more interest.

I’ll be interested to see how his career progresses beyond high school.
