High school swimming league championships Friday and Saturday in Santa Rosa

High school swimming grabs the spotlight this weekend with both the North Bay League and Sonoma County League championship finals to be held Saturday.

The NBL prelims are Friday from 4-5 p.m. and Saturday 9:30-noon and finals Saturday from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Santa Rosa JC’s Quinn Aquatic Center.

The SCL prelims are Friday 2:30-6:30 p.m. and finals Saturday 2:30-6:30 at Ridgway Swim Center adjacent to Santa Rosa High.

In the NBL, both the Maria Carrillo boys and girls take an 8-0 record into the meet, having gone undefeated in dual competition. The Montgomery girls and Ukiah boys are second at 7-1. The Maria Carrillo girls have won or shared the last eight NBL titles and last year shared the championship with Montgomery after going undefeated in league duals.

Returning girls NBL champs include Carrillo’s Maya DiRado (200, 100 free), Montgomery’s Tephanie Sims (50 free), Santa Rosa’s Molly Hannis (500 free, 100 breast) and Ursuline diver Jennifer Meyer (1-meter springboard).

The only returning NBL boy champion is Carrillo’s Matt Stuhr (200, 500 free).

In the SCL, the Casa Grande boys and Windsor girls made it through duals at 7-0.

Defending SCL girl champs include Windsor’s Jessie Ampuero (200 free), Petaluma’s Holly Munger (50, 100 free), St. Vincent’s Alison Blom (100 fly), Windsor’s Lesley Pfieffer (500 free) and Sonoma’s Claire Wirick (100 back).

For the boys, returning champs are Analy’s Max Horrell (100 fly, 100 back), Analy’s Nick Johnson (100 breast) and Petaluma’s Evan Vizcarra (500 free).

Swimmers are trying to swim North Coast Section automatic qualifying times for the NCS championship meet May 15-16 in Concord.
