Big game Monday between Montgomery and Newman in NBL baseball

One of the biggest Empire baseball games of the year is scheduled for Monday at Cardinal Newman with Montgomery paying a visit. It’s a makeup of an earlier rainout of the second meeting between North Bay League opponents.

Montgomery is undefeated in the NBL and Newman has just one loss, to Montgomery.

Montgomery has been led by pitcher/first baseman Kevin Lavarta, who pitched a two-hit complete game against Rancho last week.

Cardinal Newman is batting .370 as a team. Karl Kobler, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and six RBIs against Piner last week, is batting .467 with 27 RBIs. Nick DeLorenzo is batting .446 with nine doubles and three triples. Michael Knott, who went 5-for-5 against Ukiah last week is batting .397.

Both teams will compete in the NCS Division II playoffs and the league champion will secure an automatic berth. If the two schools tie, the postseason league tournament will decide which team gets the berth.
