Most deserving Empire schools will make Div. II playoffs

The worry for some of the large school baseball teams in the Redwood Empire would be they couldn’t crack the Division II field that includes East Bay schools in the new North Coast Section playoff format.

Scanning the prospective 24 teams in the Division II playoffs, it looks like most of the deserving clubs will have a chance to make the playoffs.

Twelve teams are eligible and league champs are automatically in the playoffs. Here are teams contending for league titles in Div. II or have winning records at the moment:

Alameda, Arroyo, Cardinal Newman, Casa Grande, Clayton Valley, Montgomery, Northgate, Rancho Cotate and Redwood. That’s nine teams and bubble teams would include Concord, Eureka, Maria Carrillo, Petaluma, Sonoma and Ukiah.

So fears of only a couple of teams from the Empire making the playoff field in Div. II seems unfounded. And if a Petaluma, Carrillo or Sonoma gets hot the second half of league, there’s a good chance there might be as many Empire schools in the Div. II baseball playoffs as made the old Redwood Empire Class 3A field.
