Nadolski's college choice seems wise

Casa Grande senior left-hander Matt Nadolski has verbally committed to San Diego State, which has a decent recent track record for developing pitchers.

Or at least one pitcher in particular.

Stephen Strasburg, who went undrafted after his senior year at West Hills High in Santee, is a junior at San Diego State and is expected to be the top pick in the major league baseball draft in June.

Strasburg won one game as a junior at West Hills and was a second-team all-league pick as a senior.

He arrived at SDSU pudgy and out of shape, but he is now an All-American who is 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA this season and has 94 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings.

His fastball has been clocked at over 100 miles per hour. Strasburg’s story, of course, doesn’t mean Nadolski will have a similar meteoric rise.

But it does suggest there are worse places than San Diego State for a young pitcher to develop.
