Sacred Heart Cathedral and Salesian boys win state titles

The South won seven of the 10 games at last weekend’s high school state basketball championships at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The Northern California victories came from Sacred Heart Cathedral (boys) in Division III, Salesian of Richmond (boys) in Div. IV and St. Mary’s of Stockton (girls) in Div. III.

Salesian, which played St. Mary’s of Berkeley in the NorCal finals (the team that eliminated Cardinal Newman from the playoffs), won in the most dramatic fashion, defeating Bishop Montgomery of Torrance, 65-54, on a buzzer-beating layup by Kendell Andrews. Bishop Montgomery led 59-50 with 4:37 remaining. Salesian’s Desmond Simmons had 31 points and 19 rebounds.

Sacred Heart Cathedral defeated Sacramento (the team that eliminated Analy from the Div. III NorCal playoffs) in the NorCal finals and defeated Ocean View of Huntington Beach, 62-55, to win its first state title. Sacred Heart’s Kevin Greene set a Div. III state game record with 20 rebounds.

St. Joseph’s of Alameda, which knocked Cloverdale out of the NCS playoffs and overcame a 19 point deficit in the final three minutes to beat Branson in the Div. V NorCal finals, lost to Windward of Los Angeles, 69-53, in the Div. V boys’ championship game. In the crowd for Windward was motion picture star Denzel Washington, whose son played on the Windward team.

Carondelet of Concord, which knocked the Petaluma girls out of the NCS playoffs in a semifinal game, lost to Brea Olinda in a Div. II state title game, 68-45. It was the ninth state title for Brea Olinda of Brea.
