Newman and Analy final rankings

Some people have asked why Cardinal Newman gets the final No. 1 ranking in basketball and not Analy.

Here’s my thinking: Analy did lose to Newman and Piner twice during the regular season. Yes, Analy got amazingly hot at the end of the season and it would have been great to see the Tigers go up against Piner and Newman in the playoffs. Analy was a much better team at the end of the season than the one that started 8-6.

Still, Analy and Piner played in the same Division III. While Analy didn’t beat Piner, the Tigers did beat Miramonte for the NCS championship. Miramonte eliminated Piner in the NCS playoffs.

Newman lost to St. Mary’s in the NCS Division IV semis. And which were the last two teams playing for a state berth in boys’ Division IV? Salesian and St. Mary’s both of the NCS. Salesian defeated St. Mary’s for the third time and will play for a state title this weekend at Arco.

As for Division III, Sacramento, the team that eliminated Analy in the NorCal semis, lost to Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in the NorCal finals.
