Tonight's volleyball match at Maria Carrillo could be great

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch:

If past section titles are any barometer, tonight’s girls’ volleyball match between Maria Carrillo and visiting Redwood in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals could be memorable.

The two programs have combined for the past three Division II crowns, with Carrillo (28-5) winning in 2007 and 2005. In addition, Redwood (27-10) also won a Division III title in 2003.

I covered a Carrillo volleyball match in September when the Pumas beat Analy in five sets, led by 37 kills from senior outside hitter Ally Sather. I’m looking forward to watching Sather play tonight. She could have signed with some big-time Division I programs such as Hawaii or New Mexico State, but decided on Division II Sonoma State instead because she didn’t want volleyball to overwhelm her life in college.

Sather is a monster at the net. It will be interesting to see if Redwood has anyone who can slow her down.
