North Bay vs. East Bay football

You get the feeling this isn’t 1987 anymore in the high school football playoffs when our top teams would have to play De La Salle and get worked.

I think there’s a couple reasons for improved teams in the North Bay. The new division alignment keeps our best teams away from the Division I East Bay schools and puts them up against schools closer in enrollment.

Plus, I think the coaching is so good around the Empire now and we’re generating enough good football players, that the programs, for the most part, are solid.

It will be interesting to see how our top large schools — Newman, Rancho, Ukiah and Casa Grande — do in the Divivision II playoffs against schools like Clayton Valley, Ygnacio Valley and Concord.

I just have the feeling, our teams should do pretty well. The days of East Bay domination — remember Montgomery running the table against East Bay schools in 1996 — if they did ever exist are over.
