Montgomery football coach Jason Franci is ready for the upcoming season, his 30th as the Vikings’ head coach.

The Vikings have been lifting weights and conditioning since the beginning of the year and will open practice on Aug. 17, the date the CIF begins regulating all fall sports.

The Vikings will or have taken part in three camps at Montgomery, where contact is permitted and teams run through plays.

Franci said the Vikings will continue to run an “aborted-pistol” offense and returner Max Heller, who quarterbacked about half of last season, returns at QB. “He’s a great competitor,” Franci said.

There have been a couple changes to the coaching staff, with Marcello Bautista returning, but now in charge of defense. Former Piner head coach Chris Meredith will help with the offense. Frank Scalercio continues as the line coach and also joining the varsity are Brandon Simpson and JV coach Tony Zunino.

Montgomery opens the season against defending state champion Grant of Sacramento on the road Sept. 4. Montgomery will then play Lincoln of San Francisco, have a bye week and then play Casa Grande.
