Sonoma Valley football

The biggest change for Sonoma Valley football this season is moving from Division II to III, permitted because of lowering enrollment.

Long-time coach Mick O’Meara adjusted his schedule to include Div. III schools in the preseason, including a Sept. 4 opener at San Rafael, a home game with Terra Linda, at Vallejo and home against Dublin.

O’Meara and his longtime defensive coordinator Mike Mulas have had good success with not working his players hard until the first official day of practice (Aug. 17).

“That’s our philosophy,” O’Meara said of not having his players go to camps or having contact during the summer.

O’Meara’s players do take part in a summer passing league and lift weights and condition, but not on a strict schedule.

Baseball pitcher Nate Swanson looks like the Dragon quarterback. And he’s playing baseball this summer.

In O’Meara’s system juniors who backup the seniors and see some playing time become next year’s starters. “It seems to work well,” O’Meara said.

Sonoma will begin practice Aug. 17 and will play “zero” week against San Rafael, giving the Dragons a little over two weeks of practice before their first game.
