Petaluma football

Longtime Petaluma football coach Steve Ellison had just ended a rafting trip down the McKenzie River in Oregon when he reported on his team.

For the second year, his Petaluma team held its own six-week football camp that involved weight lifting and speed training, all on an individual basis.

Ellison also doesn’t believe in football drills or contact between players before the Aug. 17 practice starting period. He feels that the three weeks of practice, in pads, leading up to the first game is enough.

After two weeks, starting Aug. 17, Petaluma usually takes part in a scrimmage with a number of other high schools.

Petaluma also hosts a passing league.

Petaluma has plenty of returning talent on offense, including all-Empire running back Sean Sullivan, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards each of the last two seasons, running back Ricky Sims and quarterback Mike Russell, a junior Olympics boxing champ.

Ellison also reports good experience on the offensive line.

Petaluma has an all-North Bay League preseason schedule that includes Santa Rosa, Maria Carrillo, Ukiah and Rancho Cotate.
