Healdsburg High football coach Tom Kirkpatrick is another Empire coach who is not a big believer in contact before the Aug. 17 start of practice because of the chance of injury.

Healdsburg linemen did attend a camp specific to line play at University of Pacific.

Healdsburg skill position players also take part in the SRJC passing league in in 7-on-7 passing tournaments for high school teams at Stanford, Laney College in Oakland and San Mateo. Kirkpatrick explained it’s the best way for quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs for learning their positions without much chance of injury.

Kirkpatrick is expecting good things from three-year varsity lineman A.J. Ruiz, from running back Dillon Cattalini and quarterback Killian Collins.

Healdsburg’s preseason schedule includes McKinleyville, Alhambra,
Acalanes and Piner.
