Newman RB Stout leaves team

Steven Stout, Cardinal Newman’s leading rusher before the Rancho Cotate game Friday night, was AWOL.
Stout, who had 405 yards in seven games to lead an offense sorely in need of a fix, didn’t play. According to Newman sources, Stout has left the team and will not return, choosing to skip the remainder of the season to concentrate on baseball. A couple of minutes before the beginning of the game, I approached Newman principal Graham Rutherford, who was in the press box to lead the traditional pre-game Newman prayer, and he confirmed that Stout had chosen to leave the team.
It’s not clear if Stout’s decision was based on the new double-wing offense installed by Paul Cronin. What was obvious, however, was the emergence of Tyler Laron, Bryson Dumont and Matt Bowman.
The trio, along with QB Jack James, carved up the Cougars on the ground, rushing for 398 yards. Credit must be given to Newman’s offense for learning, implementing and then executing, almost flawlessly, a new offensive system in one week.
