A double dose of the double wing

In Cardinal Newman’s 21-3 win at Ukiah on Friday night, both the Cardinals and Wildcats used the double-wing offense.
The double wing is a run-heavy attack — Newman attempted three passes — which meant the clock rarely stopped moving as both teams ran. And ran. And ran.
“That might have been the fastest football game in history,” Cardinal Newman coach Paul Cronin said. “We were back in Santa Rosa by 10:30 p.m.”
* Former Cardinal Newman coach Ed Lloyd, who coached Cronin at Piner and Mendocino College, isn’t thrilled with his old quarterback’s move from the spread offense to the double wing.
“I told Paul, ‘What is that? I don’t know who you are any more,’” Lloyd said with a laugh.
