Montgomery’s Fitchie taking leave of absence

Posted by Staff Writer Eric Branch:
Montgomery boys’ basketball coach Tom Fitchie, one of the most decorated coaches and players in Empire history, has taken a leave of absence for personal reasons.
Montgomery athletic director Dean Haskins said he expects Fitchie to return this season. Fitchie, 57, has coached the Vikings for the past 25 years, and his connection to the school dates back over four decades.
Fitchie will be replaced on an interim basis by first-year assistant coach Brian Long, 44, who had been an assistant at Santa Rosa Junior College the past six years under Craig McMillan. Long, a graduate of Cardinal Newman, coached for eight seasons at Geyserville High — leading the Broncos to two league titles — prior to going to SRJC.
I’ll have a story on Fitchie’s leave of absence for Wednesday’s paper.
