Postgame stuff from Casa Grande-Las Lomas

Posted by Staff Writer Eric Branch:
This and that from Casa Grande’s 42-20 over Las Lomas in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals:
* The Gauchos fumbled the opening kickoff and lost a fumble on their next possession to fall behind 14-0 in the first quarter.
Not a great way to start. But Casa Grande coach Trent Herzog said his players remained calm on the sideline.
“We were talking about ‘Don’t panic. Don’t panic. We’ve been here before,’” Herzog said. “And the kids just believed.”
* After the first quarter, the Gauchos outscored Las Lomas, 42-6. “The second, third and fourth quarters, that was as well as we’ve played all year,” Herzog said.
* Casa Grande running back Kahlil Keys ended his brilliant night with a flourish. Keys capped the scoring on an 82-yard run in which Herzog said he bulldozed three would-be tacklers — knocking one out of the game — and outran the rest. Keys had 19 carries for 182 yards and caught 3 passes for 63 yards. He has rushed for 1,170 yards and 16 TDs this season.
* Gauchos safety Makana Garrigan had another standout performance. Garrigan, a junior, had a team-high 12 tackles and two interceptions. He has 111 tackles and 11 interceptions this season. By the way (take a deep breath), Garrigan is also Casa Grande’s punter, holder on field-goal and extra-point attempts, has 35 catches for 419 yards and six TD and has completed 2 of 2 passes for 55 yards and a TD.
* After throwing four interceptions in Casa Grande’s Egg Bowl loss to Petaluma, Casa Grande quarterback Nick Sherry admitted he didn’t handle the big-game pressure very well. Evidently Sherry, a junior, has learned how to deal with his butterflies. Sherry completed 17 of 26 passes for 224 yards with one interception and five touchdowns, four to tight end Tyler White. Sherry has thrown 16 TDs and three interceptions in seven games since the Egg Bowl.
* Sherry tied a school record with five touchdown passes. He broke the school record for passing yards in a game earlier this season with 302 in a 38-32 win against Napa.
* White broke a school record with four touchdown catches. The previous record of three was held by Justin Elsey (1993). Elsey went on to earn a full-ride baseball scholarship to Oklahoma.
