Rey Maualuga’s pregame talks with Eureka

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga, a Eureka High alum, has remained in close contact with his high school and his cousin, Eureka running back Soma Vainuku.
Vainuku said that Maualuga has spoken with the Loggers via speakerphone before each of their three playoff games.
Maualuga called Friday about four hours before kickoff when Eureka was at its hotel. Maualuga calls a coach’s cell phone and the team huddles around and listens as the former USC All-American offers some pregame advice and inspiration.
“He was telling us what it felt like to get a ring,” Vainuku said of Maualuga, who won an NCS title at Eureka in 2003. “He told us it could be our last game, so give it everything you’ve got. He said he wishes he was still in high school.”
Maualuga went back to Eureka during the Bengals’ bye week in late October and attended the Loggers’ 35-12 win over Del Norte, which was played about 80 miles away in Crescent City.
