Boys' basketball rankings

Posted by Staff Writer Eric Branch:
These rankings ran in Wednesday’s paper and were put together prior to Tuesday night’s games. In hindsight, it appears Healdsburg (13-3, 3-0 in Sonoma County League) belongs in the top five. I initially kept the Greyhounds out because they have quite a few non-league wins against small schools such Roseland Prep, Clear Lake, Lower and Middletown. I was waiting for the Greyhounds to post a eye-opening win. Well, it didn’t take long. Healdsburg went on the road and pounded Casa Grande, a team I ranked No. 4, 64-35 on Tuesday night. Shows you what I know.

LARGE SCHOOLS (Records as of Jan. 11)
1. Analy (14-1): Tigers picking up where they left off last year.
2. Ukiah (13-1): Wildcats had impressive 14-point win vs. Montgomery.
3. Montgomery (10-4): Vikings ended recent 3-game skid with rout of Rancho Cotate.
4. Casa Grande (9-7): Gauchos impressed in tough OT loss to Analy.
5. Elsie Allen (8-5): Lobos boast strong inside game in Taggart and Johnson.

SMALL SCHOOLS
1. Cloverdale (14-2): Only losses were to Newman and Acalanes.
2. Roseland Prep (8-6): Have hung tough vs. the big boys. Have losses to Elsie Allen and Windsor by a combined three points.
3. Willits (7-6): Have wins vs. Roseland and St. Vincent and a loss to St. Helena.
4. St. Vincent (8-7): Boast a one-point win over St. Helena in early December.
5. St. Helena (7-6): Have 6-2 record vs. Empire schools.
