Cloverdale's Rowland nearing Empire's scoring record

Cloverdale’s Robby Rowland, a 6-foot-6 senior guard/forward, is 136 points away from breaking the 13-year-old Empire all-time boys’ scoring record held by Rincon Valley Christian’s Rich Waller.
Rowland, a four-year starter who is averaging 26.4 points a game, ranks third in Empire history with 2,254 points. Cloverdale’s Craig McMillan is second with 2,307 points and Waller has 2,389.
As an eighth grader, Rowland remembers being inspired by the exploits of former Cloverdale star Craig Bernardi, who ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list. He also memorized McMillan’s season point totals, which are included as part of a framed tribute to McMillan in Cloverdale’s gym.
“I set that goal to get the record my first practice of my freshamn year,” Rowland said. “It was a pretty big goal and thank God that it’s happening.”
If he maintain his current scoring average, Rowland would pass McMillan on Jan. 29 at St. Vincent and break the record on Feb. 12 at home against Upper Lake. Rowland, a pitcher, has signed a baseball scholarship with Oregon, but he received recruiting interest in basketball from schools such as San Jose State, Sacramento State and Hawaii.
“It would mean all the hard work has paid off,” Rowland said of breaking the record. “All the extra work, all the times asking for the keys to the gym and getting my coach mad at me.”
Cloverdale accounts for five of the top eight players on the all-time list: Bernardi, Dennis Kurpinsky (‘91-94) is seventh with 1,919 and Craig Bernardi (1983-86) is eighth with 1,810. In addition, Cloverdale’s Krista Warren (‘96-99) holds the girls’ all-time Empire record with 2,828 points.
