Cardinal Newman's '10 football schedule still difficult, but different

Cardinal Newman’s non-league football schedule won’t be less arduous in 2010, but it will be different.
After playing Division II power Del Oro the past four years, the Cardinals will drop the Golden Eagles and replace them with Valley Christian, which plays in the powerhouse West Catholic Athletic League. Valley Christian won four Central Coast Section titles from 2002-05 and went 8-4 last year.
Cardinal Newman coach Paul Cronin said it could prove beneficial to play Valley Christian, which, like Newman, is a Division III school. A win over a Division III power could help Newman’s state-championship resume if it wins a section title.
“You can’t make that your goal for the year,” Cronin said. “But you’d hate to be a section winner and not have given your team the best chance to go Southern California.”
Newman will open the season on Sept. 4 against Central Catholic in the second annual Battle at the Capital, which was held at Folsom High this past season. After a bye week, the Cardinals will host Valley Christian on Sept. 17. They will host Palma on Sept. 25.
