Saturday's Finals Predictions

Ok, we’ll do those in order in which they’ll be played:

BOYS

Div. III

Calistoga (18-2-0) vs. Branson (14-5-5) at Marin Catholic, noon
PREDICTION:
This one is pure hunch. Having seen neither of these teams play… well, it’s kind of a crapshoot. Kind of. Branson has less wins and more losses but probably played a tougher schedule. Calistoga probably played on worse fields, traveled more but got better as the season rolled along. All of the Bulls losses were on the road during the regular season. They won’t be at home Saturday and Calistoga coach Carlos Garcia says he’ll know how to play them after about 10 minutes. After 80 minutes I expect him to be very pleased.
PREDICTED FINAL: Calistoga 3, Branson 1
FINAL: Branson 2, Calistoga 1 (OT)

Div. I

Santa Rosa (20-3-2) at Marin Catholic (24-2-2), 2:30 p.m.
PREDICTION:
No matter how you look at it, it’s been a magical season for the Panthers. New coach, new attitude, new scheme, new spot at the top of the NBL standings. MC is for real – big, strong, skilled, fast. MC has never won a NCS title. The last time SR won one today’s Panthers were playing U-7 soccer. Maybe if SR gets physical with MC it’ll be different. But they probably won’t. Here is the key: If SR can stop, even slow down Chase Raskowsky (No. 7) they win. But if they don’t… Guess here is that they won’t.
PREDICTED FINAL: Marin Catholic 2, Santa Rosa 1
FINAL: Marin Catholic 3, Santa Rosa 1

GIRLS

Div. III

Sonoma Academy (18-2-0) vs. St. Vincent (16-1-0) at SR High, 5 p.m.
PREDICTION:
You just have to like St. Vincent head coach Paul Sweeney. Seriously, any time a coach tells you: “Go ahead, predict them to win 5-0. Do it. Come on,” well you know he’s enjoying himself. Sweeney’s an old Irish futboler so don’t take him or his team lightly. But 5-nil? Not gonna do it. In fact, if anything was wrong with SA’s Kate Bayes I might favor Mr. Sweeney’s 11. But Kate is just fine, thank you. And despite being rough around the edges, Kate is still too much to contain for 80 minutes. This might turn out to be something of a shootout.
PREDICTED FINAL: Sonoma Academy 3, St. Vincent 2
FINAL: Sonoma Academy 1, St. Vincent 0 (OT)

Div. I

Montgomery (21-2-1) vs. Casa Grande (15-2-3) at SR High, 7 p.m.
PREDICTION:
Well, will the third time be a charm for head coach Pat McDonald and the Vikings? Can they finally get rid of their Gaucho dilemma? Face it, teams these two schools put on the field the past two years have been better. But that does not mean that this game won’t be entertaining. Oh, it will be. Not too many dull moments with McDonald and Casa’s head coach Vinnie Cortezzo on the sidelines and that’s before you even look out on the field. They have played twice this year and Monty has prevailed twice, 1-0. It could come down to PKs or it could come down to Kareli Rodriguez getting a break-away and going one-on-one vs. Gauchos’ goalie Ashley Luis. And if it comes down to that, I’ll take Luis.
PREDICTED FINAL: Casa Grande 2, Montgomery 1
FINAL: Montgomery 2, Casa Grande 1
