Ukiah to Cloverdale to Willits to retirement

Willits boys’ basketball coach Duane Nelson will step down after this season due, in part, to a rugged travel schedule.
Nelson, 48, lives in Ukiah, works in Cloverdale and coaches in Willits — a daily trek of about 105 miles. Nelson, who is married with two school-aged children, said he’s looking forward to more time at home.
“I drive by my house (after work) and wave every day,” he said.
Nelson, in his sixth year at Willits, also coached for seven years at Upper Lake and five at Laytonville. His teams have made 10 playoff appearances and won two league titles.
