Piner football: Eye-opening season opener

The Piner High football team will open the 2010 season on the road against Eureka, the defending North Coast Section Division II champions.
The Prospectors, who went 2-8 in ‘09 under first-year coach Matt Tomlin, will visit Eureka on Sept. 3. They will visit Analy in Week 2 and host Healdsburg in Week 3.
Tomlin said he scheduled Eureka to give his team a chance to play out of Sonoma County (they dropped El Molino from the schedule), get experience playing a Wing-T team (NBL foe Maria Carrillo runs the same offense) and to test itself against elite competition. Worth noting, Tomlin’s father-in-law, Jack Lakin, was the former football coach at Eureka.
“I think it will be a great learning experience for the rest of the season,” Tomlin said. “I don’t think anything will seem too big after that.”
