Do you know your Empire wrestling?

Seventeen Empire wrestlers have qualified for the CIF State Championships, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield. In the process of researching the item on wrestling today, I compiled more information than the notebook could handle. But that’s what blogs are for. I think.
So the following is Empire wrestling trivia that shouldn’t go to waste. The complete list of the Empire’s all-time state medalists is a bit lengthy so I’ll post it on a separate blog:

* Four Empire wrestlers have won state titles:
2006: Andrew Rogers (145 pounds), Healdsburg
1990: Brett Colombini (175 pounds), Ukiah
1980: John Noland (165 pounds), Piner
1979: Joe Guinn (heavyweight), Rancho Cotate

* Empire wrestlers have won 32 state medals since the first state championships were held in 1973. The breakdown by schools:
1. Ukiah, 9
2. Healdsburg, 8
T3. Willits 3
T3. Rancho Cotate, 3
T5. Laytonville, Lower Lake, Maria Carrillo, Middletown, Montgomery, Piner, Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Windsor, 1
Note: Ukiah won seven medals from 1986-91. Healdsburg has won six medals since 2002.
