(Thanks to my colleague here at the PD, Frank Marqua, for this post. I more or less stopped paying attention after the Empire teams were eliminated).

North Coast Section teams will occupy 11 of the 20 spots in this weekend’s NorCal basketball finals. The Sac-Joaquin Section placed six teams in the NorCal finals, and the Central Coast Section had three teams. The smaller Northern Section and Oakland City Section did not have a team reach the finals.
Six NCS teams (De La Salle of Concord, Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland, St. Mary’s of Berkeley and Branson of Ross in the boys, Berkeley and St. Mary’s of Berkeley in the girls) enter the NorCal finals as No. 1 seeds. In addition, four NorCal finals have NCS teams squaring off: De La Salle (29-2) vs. No. 3 Newark Memorial (29-4) in Division I boys, St. Mary’s of Berkeley (25-9) vs. No. 2 Salesian of Richmond (32-2) in Division IV boys, Branson (24-6) vs. No. 7 University of San Francisco (28-7) in Division V boys and St. Mary’s of Berkeley (30-3) vs. No. 3 McKinleyville (29-3) in Division IV girls.
The other NorCal finals involving NCS teams are O’Dowd (29-3) vs. No. 2 Sacramento in Division III boys, Berkeley (28-3) vs. No. 2 seed Oak Ridge (30-3) in Division I girls and No. 2 seed Carondelet (26-5) vs. No. 1 seed Archbishop Mitty of San Jose (26-5) in Division II girls.
The De La Salle-Newark Memorial, O’Dowd-Sacramento, Berkeley-Oak Ridge and Mitty-Carondelet games will be Saturday at Arco Arena in Sacramento. The St. Mary’s-Salesian, Branson-University and St. Mary’s-McKinleyville games will be Saturday at Folsom High School.
NorCal champions play in the state finals March 26-27 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
