Ex-Empire standout Mertle takes over at Windsor

Monica Mertle, a two-time Empire Player of the Year at Ursuline who was an all-conference player at St. Mary’s College, has been named the girls’ basketball coach at Windsor High School.
Mertle, 25, will take over for Joe Passalacqua, who resigned after leading the Jaguars to a 16-12 record and into the NCS Division II quarterfinals in his seventh year at the school. Passalacqua, 48, an attorney, is leaving to devote more time to his law practice.
Mertle was a full-time assistant this past season after serving in a part-time role two years ago. She runs the North Bay Elite AAU basketball program with her younger sister, Heidi, who played at Sonoma State.
