Regardless of the level of competition, the Northwest Oaks Shamrock Rovers (boys U16) youth soccer team may have recently completed one of the best seasons ever recorded in the Empire.

The Rovers, winners of the Div. 3 California Youth Soccer Association-North’s Association Cup last weekend in Redding, finished the season with a 30-1-1 record (10-0 in their league), outscored opponents 135-14 and blitzed through the postseason Cup field with a 7-0 record, again outscoring their opponents 30-4.

The Rovers won the title game, 5-0, over the Redding Kaos Surge at the Redding Soccer Park.
The team, coached by Bill McKeever, consisted of players (freshmen-juniors) from Cardinal Newman, Maria Carrillo, Rancho Cotate, Montgomery and Rincon Valley Christian high schools.

McKeever, who started building this team six years ago, wouldn’t pinpoint a top scorer, saying only it was a combination of a lot of players.

“We were just very solid all around,” McKeever said. “I wouldn’t say any one player dominated. We started six years ago with a corps of players from Santa Rosa and just added a good player or two over the years until we got the players we had this season.”

Maria Carrillo sophomore Cody Keading was the goalie behind that stellar defense that yielded only .43 goals per game all season.

The Association Cup is geared for Div. 3 teams, although Div. 4 teams can enter. This year’s tournament opened on March 13 and the finals were played April 11. In the boys U16 field, 43 teams competed.

Div. 1 teams compete in the CYSA State Cup.
