Cardinal Newman’s McCall suffers broken leg

Cardinal Newman junior guard Xavier McCall, the co-MVP of the North Bay League, suffered a broken leg during a tryout for an AAU team in Oakland about two weeks ago and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months.
McCall suffered a broken tibia and dislocated knee when he went up for a layup during warmups. The non-contact injury required surgery in which screws were inserted to stabilize the bone.
“He just exploded up for a layup and the leg broke,” said Cardinal Newman coach Tom Bonfigli.
Bonfigli said doctors are “very optimistic” McCall will make a full recovery and would be able to play basketball again at some point this summer.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound McCall averaged 14.7 points a game to help lead the Cardinals to a 22-8 record and the NBL regular-season title. He averaged 17.3 points in Newman’s last 12 games and scored a career-high 27 in a 59-54 loss to Arcata in the North Coast Section Division IV quarterfinals.
