Santa Rosa's Byers breaks 3,200 record

Santa Rosa senior Reesey Byers broke the Empire record in the 3,200 meters Saturday at the Aracadia Invitational.
Byers’ time of 8 minutes, 59.89 seconds eclipsed the former mark of 9:01.32 set last year by Petaluma’s Sterling Lockert at the CIF State Championships.
Byers, whose previous best time was 9:06.93, set the Empire record in the 3,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational two weeks ago. His time of 8:19.81 is the second-fastest in the nation this year and was the equivalent of a sub-nine-minute 3,200.
“Based on what he did at Stanford, we knew he was ready to break it,” Santa Rosa coach Doug Courtemarche said. “Still, that’s a major accomplishment.”
Byers finished 16th overall at Arcadia and placed fifth among California runners.
