Montgomery softball has streak snapped

The Montgomery softball team had its 34-game regular-season winning streak snapped with a 6-5, 10-inning loss to Moreau Catholic on Saturday in the semifinals of the Standley Cup Tournament in Hayward. The Vikings hadn’t lost in the regular season since a 6-5 setback to Rancho Cotate on May 15, 2008.
The loss, however, came with an asterisk. The Vikings (11-1) were missing four starters against Moreau Catholic (11-1), which is led by outfielder Jordan Lewis, who has signed with East Carolina University.
Three Montgomery starters missed the game to take their SAT tests and all-Empire first baseman Amanda Cuccaro did not play due to the recent death of her father. Vikings coach Mike Malvino said Cuccaro will rejoin the team this week.
Sean Cuccaro, a veteran Sebastopol police officer, died on April 1 after a brief battle with cancer.
