How about some dream matchups

DURBAN, South Africa —

My dream championship game…or games.

It’s 1:15 a.m. and I just finished a call with KSRO radio in Santa Rosa. Gotta love the time change. I should be dreaming right now, but can’t stop thinking about the potential matchups. I know there are still two quarterfinals and two semifinals to be played, but it doesn’t stop me from dreaming.

Sorry Uruguay, but you aren’t in any of my dream match-up scenarios even though an Argentina vs. Uruguay matchup would be exciting.

Holland makes up one-half of the dream final.

The other half, well, Paraguay isn’t in it, leaving either Germany, Argentina or Spain.

Netherlands vs. Germany – are you kidding me?

They share a border and HATE each other with a passion. Dutch cheese vs. German beer. Dutch bikes vs. German Mercedes. Dutch clogs vs. German Lederhosen. Dutch Tulips vs. well, the Germans don’t really have a flower of choice, but you get the point. The only thing they have in common is the hatred they have for one another.

Netherlands vs. Argentina – in ‘74 and ‘78 they met in the final and the Dutch have been waiting for the rematch for a mere 32 years. To add some spice, let’s say the Netherlands participated in the Falklands War against Argentina (they didn’t, but England isn’t here to care).

Maradona clearly enjoys the Dutch cheese from the looks of things and El Diego felt snubbed by not being named to the team in 1978 when Argentina beat Netherlands in the final so this could be his chance to rewrite history.

Netherlands vs. Spain – Both teams play a very similar style and it could be a wide open, possession, attacking bonanza. It could be the championship game with the highest percentage of completed passes in World Cup finals history. It might end up 4-4 after 90 minutes, 6-6 after overtime and both teams would agree to be co-champions instead of deciding such a beauty in penalty kicks.

I’d better get some rest.
