Petaluma will swing wood vs. Redwood

Petaluma baseball coach Paul Cochrun confirmed Thursday night that the sixth-seeded Trojans will use wood bats when they visit No. 3 Redwood on Saturday in the North Coast Section Division II quarterfinals.
The game will mark the ninth game pitting a Marin County Athletic team against a non-MCAL team in the first or second round. It appears Petaluma will be the only team to use wood bats. The other eight teams used metal bats, or have indicated they will.
The MCAL voted unanimously to use wood bats in March, two weeks after Marin Catholic pitcher Gunnar Sandberg was hit in the head by a line drive off a metal bat.
Cochrun has advocated using wood bats to create a level playing field, although his team will likely be at a disadvantage since it hasn’t used wood this season. There has been an unspoken acknowledgment on Cochrun’s part that the MCAL voted to use wood in response to a horrific and traumatic injury and he is honoring that decision.
