Ex-Petaluma teammates could meet at NCAA Baseball Tournament

A pair of former teammates at Petaluma High could be on a collision course as the 64-team NCAA Baseball Tournament begins Friday.
Cal sophomore catcher Chadd Krist and Oral Roberts senior first baseman P.J. Sequeira will both play first-round games Friday at the double-elimination, four-team Norman (Okla.) Regional. Second-seeded Cal (29-23) will meet No. 3 North Carolina at 5 p.m. and No. 4 Oral Roberts (35-25) will meet No. 1 Oklahoma at 11 a.m.
If Cal and Oral Roberts both win — or both lose — Krist and Sequeira would play against each other Saturday. The pair played together on Petaluma’s 2005 team, which went 24-2 and won the Sonoma County League title.
Krist enters the NCAA Tournament hitting .344 with a team-high 10 homers and 44 RBIs. He ranks second on the Golden Bears in average and RBIs. On Wednesday, Krist was one of four Cal players to be named an all-Pac-10 first-team selection.
Sequeira, an all-state selection at Santa Rosa Junior College, is hitting .305 with six homers and 42 RBIs. In the final two games of the Summit League Tournament, Sequeira went 6-for-9 with five RBIs and four doubles to help the Golden Eagles win the title and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
Two other former Empire stars, Ukiah’s Chad Bunting and Cloverdale’s Mitch Delfino, are both starting for Cal.
Bunting, a sophomore center fielder, is hitting .317 with three homers and 26 RBIs. Delfino, a freshman third baseman, is hitting .310 with one homer and 10 RBIs. Delfino was a USA Today All-USA second-team selection as a senior at Cloverdale.
