Richie Rowland off to hot start

It’s still quite early, but former Cloverdale star Richie Rowland, an undrafted free agent, is leading the Pioneer League in hitting.
Rowland, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound catcher, is hitting .545 (12 for 22) in his first seven games with the Missoula (Mt.) Osprey, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ short-season rookie advanced team.
Rowland, who has one strikeout and five RBIs, has a six-game hitting streak. Rowland was an all-conference catcher at Campbellsville (Ky.) University, an NAIA school, this past season. He hit .376 with 11 homers and 61 RBIs, all team-highs, as a junior.
Rowland younger brother, Robby, Arizona’s third-round pick in this month’s MLB Draft, is slated to make his pro debut when he starts for Missoula on Wednesday night against visiting Great Falls.
