USC women win; SRJC men lose

This is championship Sunday for two significant soccer finals. Here are the final results:

At College Station, Texas

Final: USC 2, Florida State 0

Congratulations to Montgomery High grad and USC starting defender Stacey Strong for becoming a national champion!

“There really never was a minute in that game that I didn’t think we were going to win. We just played with a lot more energy than Florida State. Even though we were leading 1-0 at halftime, our coach didn’t think we were playing all that well and that we just had to play a solid 45 minutes and we’d win.

“And, hey, our defense only allowed one goal in the entire tournament. That’s pretty good, I’d say.”

California Community College State Championship

At Fresno

Final: Taft 2, SRJC 1 (2 OTs)

NOTE: Taft scored the winning goal with about a minute left in the second overtime, otherwise the game would have gone to penalty kicks.
