Sol needs $$$ …now

Remember the Sonoma County Sol?

Well, the Sol is still kicking but its financial clock is ticking and with every passing day time is running out on the club as it tries to field teams for a fifth season in ’08 as the only premier adult soccer club in Sonoma County.

“Basically we need to raise $20,000 by the end of January,” club president Chris Arras told a group of players, board members and interested soccer fans at a meeting earlier this month at the Rincon Valley Library.

“We need that much to pay some past debts and for upfront money for the coming season,” Arras said.

The club, which fielded teams in the men’s, women’s and men’s U20 divisions a year ago, is looking for community help in three areas – financial, volunteer time and contacts for possible involvement.

For starters, Sol will sponsor a Texas Hold’em fundraiser poker tournament Jan. 19 at the St. Eugene’s Church Becker Center. The club is hoping to realize at least $11,000 of the $20,000 they need.

Another plan being discussed, albeit a longshot, for possible maintaining the club is to enter into some sort of agreement with Santa Rosa United and Sonoma County Alliance. One thought would be to combine the clubs’ U15-U19 teams under the Sol umbrella and then establish a natural link to the U20, men’s and women’s teams aleady in place.

That proposal is still in its infancy.
