SRU Freeze, Thunder, Boca Juniors reach State Cup finals

The Santa Rosa United Freeze survived two opponents and three proms over the weekend to advance to next Sunday’s (May 4th) California Youth Soccer Association North State Cup finals at Morgan Hill.

SRU Freeze will face Danville Mustang Fury at 2 p.m. for the State Cup title. By virtue of CYSA-North receiving a wild card berth in the regionals in this age group, both teams will advance to this summer’s Far West Regionals June 16-22 in Honolulu.

On Saturday, Freeze downed Marin FC, 2-0. And then they came back on Sunday morning to beat the East Fresno Fusion, 6-0. In between (Saturday night), team members attended proms at Sonoma Valley, Ursuline and Maria Carrillo High Schools. And apparently there was no fatigue factor at all involved judging from Sunday’s result.

In other early Sunday results, the SRU U15 girls Thunder downed Pleasanton Rage, 3-1, to advance to the finals at 2 p.m. next Saturday against Football MVLA Avalanche. Thunder beat De Anza Force Black, 2-1, in Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup.

SRU U14 Fusion beat Pleasanton Rage, 2-1, on Saturday and then lost to Almaden United on Sunday in the semifinals.

SRU U15 Earthquakes won their quarterfinal game on Saturday in overtime over ARYSL San Jose Spirits, but they were eliminated in Sunday’s semifinals, 6-2, by the Danville Mustange Mavericks.

On the boys side, the SRU U14 Vasco lost in the quarterfinals on Saturday to Santa Clara Sporting. And the U16 SRU Boca Juniors defeated the Redwood Strikers, 4-1, in the quarters and then beat the Manteca Rangers on penalty kicks on Sunday in the semifinals to advance to next weekend’s finals.
