Viking power; Economy 1, Soccer 0; Thursday's (9/25) picks

It was an interesting evening at Cardinal Newman Wednesday. Ursuline came out acting like it was going to run Montgomery off the field and back down Old Redwood Highway. Early on the Bears were dominating and you had the feeling it was going to be a blowout.

But hold on. Not so fast. All of sudden the Vikings’ defense made a few stops, gained a lot of confidence and … well, the final of 3-1 might be a little generous. Montgomery’s Selam Solomon didn’t score, but that didn’t really matter in this game. What did matter was that she came alive. On at least two occasions she dribbled through the Ursuline defense solo and her speed was outstanding.

With the right college program, surrounded by the right talent, Solomon will make a very good collegiate player.

Our first economic casualty of the season has come upon us. The Montgomery men’s team was supposed to entertain Eureka at 10 a.m. this Saturday, but the game has been cancelled.

“Eureka called and said their budget wouldn’t allow them to make the trip,” Montgomery head coach Mark Dunn said.

It was the first game I know of to be scratched because of finances, let’s hope it’s the last.
