A step up, a look at the collegiate level; Wednesday's (10/08) predictions

From time-to-time the SoccerBlog will also take a look at the college and junior college level. You would probably be surprised at how well a lot of our former local high school and club players are doing.

First, and we’ll get back to them in later blog entries, you owe it to yourself and to the local soccer community to support to Sonoma State and Santa Rosa Junior College men’s and women’s teams. All four are having stellar seasons and could go deep into their respective postseasons. And all four teams, especially the JC, have many local kids on their rosters

You can find their schedules elsewhere on this blog, so go out and support them.

Elsewhere:

San Diego State’s women’s team is getting immediate help from Gretel Amman (Montgomery), Tiffany Hurst (Montgomery) and Megan McQueeny (Ursuline). All three have started every game for the Aztecs (4-6-2), Gretel has a pair of goals, Megan has scored once and Tiffany has an assist. All three freshmen are proving they belong at the D1 level…

Pat Sigler (Cardinal Newman) is a starting defender as a redshirt freshman at Cal Poly. If you get the Fox Soccer Channel you can watch Pat and Cal Poly face off against UC Santa Barbara at 8 p.m., Oct. 17…

Pedro Guevera (Montgomery) is making a huge impact on the Dominican Univeristy (San Rafael) program. The freshman scored five goals in a 7-1 Penguins’ win over CSU Maritime last week. He added his seventh goal of the season on Tuesday in a 4-0 win over Bethany College. In that game all four DU goals were scored by Sonoma County players – Ryan Vella (Piner), Alec Ziegler (Montgomery) and Tim Pinella (Maria Carrillo). The Penguins will move from the NAIA level to NCAA D2 competition next season.
