We’re a long way from the North Coast Section championship game, but a rematch of last year’s women’s finale – Montgomery vs. Casa Grande – would be a worthy matchup.
Neither team is great, but both are very, very good. They both play the game the right way, they understand the team concept of soccer, they have some speed where they need it on offense, lots of skills and both are well coached.
The Gauchos went to Sonoma Valley on Wednesday and for the first time in three years beat the Dragons on their home field. This time is was 2-0. Could have been worse.
It also could have been a “look-ahead” game for Casa. They play their home-town rival Petaluma on Saturday night. The Trojans are the only team to beat the Gauchos this season and, yes, there is a revenge factor.
“But I told our team at Tuesday’s practice all about how hard it is to win at Sonoma,” Casa coach Vinny Cortezzo said before the game, “and even though we are a very young team, they understood and we aren’t taking Sonoma lightly. They are a very capable team.”
Watch Saturday’s game closely. It’ll give you a glimpse of what might come when the NCS postseason rolls around.
