Men's semifinal predictions

Semifinal predictions….

(NOTE: Men’s games now, women’s this afternoon…..)

Men’s Class 3A games

No. 3 Terra Linda (13-2-5) at No. 2 Windsor (15-0-4), 7 p.m.

This will be the biggest test maybe in Jaguars’ soccer history. Why? Pretty obvious, a win puts Windsor in the NCS finals. A loss and there goes the undefeated season and another chance at the NCS title.
The Jags and the Knights haven’t met this season, but they do have a couple of common foes.
Terra Linda beat Piner, 3-1. Windsor downed the Prospectors, 6-1.
Windsor beat Casa Grande twice – 4-0 and 3-2. The Knights downed the Gauchos, 2-0.
So, comparative scores don’t mean a whole lot here, other than to say they are pretty evenly matched.
Windsor’s positive and negative fall on the shoulders of David Mendez. The positive is that he has scored 23 goals this season which makes him one of the most potent offensive weapons on any team.
The negative is also Mendez. The opposition can so focus on him that much of the Jaguar offense disappears when he is tightly marked.
As Mendez goes, so go the Jags.
Can they overcome that tonight?
Well, they are home, the surface is to their liking, no one has defeated them yet and until someone, anyone, proves it can be done….

PREDICTION: Windsor 3, Terra Linda 1
Windsor 3, Terra Linda 0

No. 4 Montgomery (15-5-2) at No. 1 Maria Carrillo (18-0-3), 7 p.m.

This one isn’t quite as hard as it looks.
They have played three times, Carrillo has won all three.
First time: a preseason tournament in Marin, 2-0.
Second time: a 5-0 blowout at Montgomery.
Third time: one of the best games of the year, 3-2, at Carrillo after MC blew a 2-0 lead and had to win it in OT.
Now, No. 4.
Of course, the Vikings are going to have to play a perfect game to win. Can they? Yes.
And the Pumas, with all their talent, have to check their egos at the door, keep an even keel on the field no matter the score and play efficient soccer.
That is exactly what they did two years ago when they beat Santa Rosa, Analy, Cardinal Newman and Healdsburg on the way to the school’s first NCS men’s title.
Can they do it again? Certainly.
But if they don’t control their emotions throughout they could be in trouble.
It might not even be close … then again…

PREDICTION: Montgomery 3, Maria Carrillo 2 (OT)
Maria Carrillo 5, Montgomery 1
