Empire well represented in NCAA D-I tournament

So, just how good is soccer in the Empire?

We’re not even talking about women’s soccer at the DI level or NCAA Div. II or NAIA teams represented by local men’s and women’s players.

This is simply NCAA Div. I men’s teams in the NCAA Div. I tournament that starts Friday night.

The Empire has nine players with ties to the area who will take the field in the opening round on five different teams.

We’ve probably missed some, but here are the ones we know for sure:

Pat Sigler (Cardinal Newman) – freshman (redshirt) defender at Cal Poly (at UCLA, 7 p.m. Friday).

Hugh Fike (Cardinal Newman) – senior defender at George Mason (vs. Penn, 7 p.m. Friday).

Josh Baugh (SRU ’08) – senior midfielder at Penn (at George Mason, 7 p.m. Friday)

Michael Schmidt (Analy) – freshman midfielder at Ohio State (at Oakland, Mich., 10 a.m. Saturday).

Denver at UC Davis, 1 p.m. Saturday

Empire players on UC Davis roster:

Tommy Siragusa (St. Vincent) – freshman goalie
Jake Mogelson (Sonoma Valley) – senior defender
Andrew Robello (Cardinal Newman) – freshman mid/forward
Ethan Shawlee (Montgomery) – freshman defender
Andy Walker (Ukiah) – freshman mid/forward
