Football: Predicting the season openers

OK, buckle up. Here we go again.
I’ll be at the Windsor vs. Montgomery game tonight. Mike Coit will cover San Rafael vs. Sonoma and Bob Padecky will pen a column from Santa Rosa vs. Petaluma.
Now, to the predictions.
(Note: Please remember, a pick against your school is not evidence that I/the PD/the community as a whole has an intense dislike for your wonderful campus. It only means that after hours of exhaustive research, including game-film study of Fortuna’s special-teams coverage, I have come to the expert conclusion — coin flips are often used — that your school won’t win the game).

Tonight’s games
Petaluma at Santa Rosa, 7:30 p.m.

Pick: Petaluma 16, Santa Rosa 10
Comment: Santa Rosa leads the 89-year-old series, 40-34-7.

Montgomery at Windsor, 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Montgomery 22, Windsor 14
Comment: Vikings return several key players from last year’s 11-3 edition.

Piner at Eureka, 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Eureka 37, Piner 13
Comment: There are easier ways to start a season. Eureka is the defending NCS Division II champion.

Analy at Miramonte, 7 p.m.
Pick: Analy 28, Miramonte 25
Comment: Miramonte returns QB and four offensive linemen from last year’s team, which reached the NCS Division semis as a No. 12 seed. Obviously, I think Analy could be pretty good, too.

El Molino at Fortuna, 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Fortuna 24, El Molino 20
Comment: I think El Mo will be much better. But last year’s score (Fortuna 44, El Molino 7) makes me wonder: Are they 38 points better?

San Rafael at Sonoma, 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Sonoma 23, San Rafael 6
Comment: San Rafael has a 7-23 record since 2007.

Potter Valley at South Fork, 7:30 p.m.
Pick: South Fork 21, Potter Valley 12
Comment: Potter coming off 0-10 season.

California School for the Deaf at Calistoga (at Elsie Allen), 7:30 p.m.
Pick: Calistoga 32, CSD 18
Comment: This is … a wild guess.

Mission (San Francisco) at Tomales, 8 p.m.

Pick: Tomales 48, Mission 8
Comment: Would be win for No. 100 for Leon Feliciano at Tomales.

Saturday’s games
Cardinal Newman vs. Central Catholic, at Del Oro High, 2 p.m.
Pick: Central Catholic 27, Cardinal Newman 23
Comment: Raiders have won at least 11 games for nine straight years.

Laytonville at St. Bernard’s, 2 p.m.
Pick: St.Bernard’s 30, Laytonville 13
Comment: Definitely won’t end in a tie.

Piedmont at Healdsburg, 7:30 p.m.

Pick: Healdsburg 26, Piedmont 12
Comment: Piedmont returning just two starters.
