Granite Bay prevails in Bay City soccer tournament

Granite Bay High rolled into town this past weekend to compete in the 16-team 3rd Annual Bay City Invitational boys soccer tournament and it rolled out with an emphatic win.

The Grizzlies from the San Joaquin Section, steamrolled their way into the finals with an 11-0 win over American, 10-0 over defending North Coast Section champion Marin Catholic and 4-0 over North Bay League powerhouse Maria Carrillo.

The Grizzlies were tested in the championship game by tournament co-host Santa Rosa, but they prevailed 2-0.

“They (Granite Bay) might have been the best high school team I’ve ever seen,” said tournament co-director and Tamalpais High head coach Dustin Nygaard. Tam finished 3-0-1 in the tournament for a third-place finish.

The Santa Rosa High Panthers, the defending North Bay League champions, are now 5-2 and will entertain El Molino at 7 p.m. Thursday,

The Panthers, 5-2, are led by senior forward Diego Leon who has six goals and four assists so far this season.
