SSU, DU match couldn’t have been much better

That Dominican at Sonoma State men’s match on Tuesday couldn’t have worked out much better:

– Decent crowd for a 5 p.m. weekday start;

– At least three Sonoma County Alliance teams showed up to watch;

– The entire Windsor High boys team came to root on their former forward, David Mendez, now a freshman at DU;

– I think all 15 players with Empire ties got in the game;

– It was very competitive with SSU winning, 3-2, and three of the five goals were scored by local kids (Trevor Hurst for SSU; Pedro Guevara with a pair for DU).

– No one got hurt and no one received a red card.

It would be nice to see this game played on a home-and-away basis every year and make it a kids day so that all youth teams in Sonoma and Marin counties could attend free of charge.

“That would be good,” said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer, “but we have a limited number of preseason games every year and I don’t know if it would work.”

Ziemer, by the way, is OK after being involved in a fender-bender on Wednesday and missing SSU’s practice. He will be back on the field Thursday.

SSU opens it’s CCAA season on Friday at home at 1:30 p.m. vs. Cal Poly Pomona.
