Rancho girls’ soccer off to stellar start

So far, so good for Jeff Smith in his first year as the Rancho Cotate girls’ soccer coach.

The longtime high school referee and youth coach has guided the Cougars to a 5-1 start heading into Friday’s North Bay League opener at home against Santa Rosa.

Four years removed from its last North Coast Section playoff appearance, Rancho Cotate has displayed plenty of offense and more than capable defense, outscoring opponents 15-4.

The Cougars only setback was a 1-0 loss to Analy in the Lady Prospector Tournament championship game at Piner.
Falling to the Tigers by a single goal is notable because Analy is 7-0-1, won two preseason tournaments and could be the surprise team of the Sonoma County League.

The other NBL girls’ games on tap Friday are Montomgery at Maria Carrillo, Ukiah at Piner and Elsie Allen at Ursuline.
