Major milestone for Maria Carrillo cross country

Long one of California’s top prep cross country programs, the Maria Carrillo girls set a remarkable milestone – 100 straight league victories – in their opening North Bay League meet.

The Pumas edged a very good Santa Rosa squad to capture the meet with Piner a distant third on Wednesday.

Ranked 10th in the state among Division 3 teams, Maria Carrillo is led by a pair of runners who could one day rival the North Bay’s best, Lauren Krause and Brynna Thigpen. Rounding out the Pumas’ top five are Taylor Graham, Gretel Petrie and Kelly Birkland.

While the Pumas have work to do to challenge for a state title, Maria Carrillo put the mileage in this summer to provide a strong base for a potentially great season.  Next up for the Pumas, this weekend’s Clovis Invitational in Fresno, held on the Woodward Park course where the California Interscholastic Federation championships are run.
