Sonoma County League’s Top Girls Golf Teams Advance

After going undefeated in Sonoma County League matches, the Healdsburg girls’ golf team captured its first ever title and has advanced to the NCS Division II Championship.

While the Greyhounds finished second in the SCL team tournament on Monday, they had enough points from the regular season for the league’s automatic bid to the section championship. Healdsburg plays in the small school finals to be held Oct. 25 at Buckingham Golf & Country Club, in Kelseyville.

Jubilant team members carried the SCL banner around the Healdsburg campus on Tuesday.

“It’s a very big thing. It’s pretty exciting,” said Healdsburg coach Jane Wann. “As the course of the season went along, we knew it would come down to the final tournament and it was fun for the girls.”

Casa Grande won the league’s team tournament, at Oakmont East in Santa Rosa, to gain a berth in the NCS Regional Qualifier on Oct. 25 at Sunol Golf Club. A win there and the Gauchos advance to the NCS Tournament of Champions set for Nov. 1 at Lone Tree Golf Course, in Antioch.

“For us, it was a great year,” said Casa Grande coach Phiul Emswiler. “We had great team chemistry. We played really well.”

Three individuals not on either Healdsburg or Casa Grande also gained spots in the regional qualifier: Khiana Schmuhl, Analy; Gretchen Hoffmann, Petaluma; and Abby Sortino, Analy.

Third place Analy is seeking an at-large berth in the regional qualifier. If the Tigers get in as a team that opens two spots for individual qualifiers who are now alternates, Lindsey Stoll, of Petaluma, and Jordann Dagner, from Sonoma Valley.
