Sather Spikes Way To Player Of Week Honor

Ally Sather is the leading attacker for Sonoma State’s volleyball team and the former Maria Carrillo star was at her best in leading the Seawolves to a pair of wins that earned her conference player of the week honors.

A sophomore, Sather is the first Sonoma State player this year to be named the Molten/CCAA Volleyball Player of the Week .

Smashing a match high 19 kills, Sather helped spark a come from behind, five set win over Chico State at home Friday. The next night, Sather had 11 kills – including the first four points of the match — in a three-set sweep of Cal State Stanislaus.

Sather also showed her value on defense, turning back five attacks, digging out four shots, and serving two aces in the two victories.

Now with 241 kills this season, Sather ranks fifth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Sather is sixth in the conference in total points.

As a freshman, Sather was named to the CCAA All-Conference Second Team and earned AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention after recording a team-leading 442 kills – most ever by a freshman and the second-best single-season mark at Sonoma State.

Sather is just off that pace in helping lead Sonoma State, now 12-7 overall and 9-6 in the CCAA, good for a third place tie.

The two straight wins were critical as Sonoma State goes on the road for its next five matches before closing the season with a pair at home. The Seawolves – ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II West Region Poll – are at conference leader Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and visit Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday.

Always a strong conference, the CCAA is playing particularly tough this season. The seven losses suffered by the Seawolves this season have been to teams that have appeared in the national rankings at some time this season, with Cal State San Bernardino No. 8 and Cal State East Bay No. 22 in the latest poll.
